Few places live up to their reputation quite like Bali, and few are quite so much to take in on a first visit. The island is bigger, busier and more varied than the postcards suggest, and a little orientation goes a long way toward loving it from the start rather than by the end.
It's not one place
The first thing to grasp is that Bali is many destinations in one. The beaches and nightlife of the south are a world away from the rice-terrace calm of Ubud or the wild coast of the east. The island's rich culture and geography reward a bit of reading before you go, and choosing the right base for your mood matters more than any single sight.
Slow down and look up
Traffic can be heavy and distances deceptive, so resist cramming the map. Pick one or two areas, settle in, and let the island's daily rhythm — the offerings, the markets, the temple ceremonies — come to you. That texture is the real Bali, and it can't be rushed.
Go with an open plan
Book your first nights and a rough shape, then leave room to change your mind once you've found your feet. Bali rewards the flexible traveller, and a first trip planned lightly almost always turns into a second.
